A boy's life is shattered by a coup, forcing his family to flee and start anew in a foreign land. Struggling with loss and identity, he finds strength in resilience and the power of survival, proving that hope can rise from the ashes of despair.

In From the Ashes of Santiago, the journey of a young boy unfolds against the backdrop of political turmoil and personal upheaval. The narrative begins with the harrowing events of September 11, 1973, when the boy's world is irrevocably altered. The chaos of military jets and the palpable fear in the streets mark the end of innocence. As his family escapes over the Andes to Buenos Aires, they carry with them the weight of their past and the uncertainty of their future.

Arriving in America, the boy faces the daunting challenge of adapting to a new culture and language, feeling like an outsider in a land that promises a fresh start. His passion for soccer becomes a sanctuary, a place where he can express himself and momentarily forget the shadows of his past. Yet, the scars of war linger, manifesting in the strained relationships within his family and the isolation he grapples with daily.

This poignant tale explores themes of identity, belonging, and the indomitable spirit of a young refugee. It delves into the complexities of growing up amid loss and the relentless pursuit of hope. As the boy navigates the trials of his new life, he learns that resilience is not merely about survival but about embracing the fragments of his shattered world. From the Ashes of Santiago is a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit and the possibility of renewal, even in the darkest of times.

The world outside our home is shifting. The whispers turn into warnings. The military grows restless. My mother’s voice is louder than ever, but I see the fear creeping into her eyes.

When the coup took Santiago, she knew our time had run out. My father - once a man I admired, and someone who held a presence so large in my life - was already starting to slip away, consumed by something neither of us could fight. He would become a ghost long before he was gone.

I didn't have the words to explain what was happening, but I felt it in my bones. We were running.

Author

At its core, this book is a love letter to my father and to every child who has been uprooted from everything they know, thrust into survival mode by forces far beyond their control. Children don’t choose political asylum. They are the innocents in political unrest, the quiet victims of wars they didn’t start, and the witnesses to histories they never asked to be part of. Their resilience is unmatched, but their stories are too often untold.

Thank you for taking this journey with me. I hope this story moves you as deeply as it has moved me.

With love,
E.T. Schrieber
